No Change in the Top 3 from Golfweek’s 2019 Best of List

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Holds all but Nos. 1 and 8 Spots

FarmLinks at Pursell Farms in Sylacauga remained the top public golf course in Alabama, according to 2020 Best Courses You Can Play list announced by Golfweek.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Grand National’s Lake Course in Opelika retained its No. 2 spot, followed by the RJT’s Ross Bridge in Hoover at No. 3.

The RJT’s The Judge Course at the Legend at Capitol Hill in Prattville, which made its first appearance on the Golfweek list in the No. 8 spot in 2019, moved up to No. 4 on the 2020 list, Golfweek said.

The RJT’s Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham retained its No. 5 spot from last year.

The Sherling/Canyon combination at the RTJ’s Cambrian Valley in Greenville, ranked No. 4 last year, comes in at No. 6 in the 2020 rankings.

The RJT’s Falls Course at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, makes its first appearance on the Golfweek list this year at No. 7, bumping Gulf Shores’ Kiva Dunes from No. 7 on last year’s list down to No. 8 in the 2020 rankings. Along with the Farmlinks at Pursell Farms, Kiva Dunes was only one of two non-RJT course to make the Top 10 of Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play in Alabama list in 2020.

No. 9 on the 2020 Golfweek rankings list is the RJT’s Grand National’s Links Course, followed by Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course, which displaced The RTJ’s Shoals’ Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals in the No. 10 spot this year.

Golfweek prefaced its 2020 rankings with a statement about its methodology. Members of its course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on ten criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings on each course are averaged together to produce a final rating for each course. Then each course is ranked against other courses in its state to produce the final rankings.
