Brother bests brother in Boys state Jr. Am
The Alabama Golf Association crowned four new champions Thursday, with two players punching their tickets in dramatic fashion to USGA national events later this summer.
Birmingham’s Scarlett Schremmer captured the Women’s State Amateur title in a playoff, while Rawlin Sutter dethroned his brother Bailey to win the rain-shortened Boys State Junior Championship.
Auburn’s Virginia Grimes was the third champion, winning the Women’s State Senior Amateur championship, while Toni Aila won the State Senior Women’s Amateur Tournament Division title.
It was Schremmer who provided the most drama, taking down Gabriella Nicastro of Huntsville in a four-hole playoff after the two tied at 10-under through 54 holes on the RTJ Golf Trails Grand National Lakes course. After tying the first three holes, Schremmer finally prevailed with a par on the fourth playoff hole while Nicastro made bogey.
Schremmer shot 68-69-69 for a 26 total. Nicastro closed with a 66 after rounds of 68-72.
Schremmer, who is headed to play collegiately at Texas A&M and is a member of the U.S. Developmental Team, earned her a spot in the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur to be held at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon, August 4-10.
Molly Brown Davidson of Springville finished in third with an overall score of four-under par 212 (68-71-73).
Julie Waldo of Prattville had a hole-in-one on No. 8, allowing her to finish in fourth at 2-over 218 (77-73-68).
Grimes, of Auburn, coasted to an easy victory Women’s State Senior Championship. Her 3-over 219 total was 17 shots ahead of Prattville’s Linda Jeffrey, who shot 236. Susan West of Tuscaloosa was third, also at 236.
In the Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur Tournament Division, Toni Aila of Ozark (93-88-88) and Courtney Williams of Vestavia Hills (90-90-89) ended the day tied for first at 269. After a scorecard playoff, Aila took home medalist honors and Williams took home second.
Dawn Miceli of Foley was one shot back at 270.
Boys State Junior
Rawlin Sutter had a short Thursday to win the rain-plagued tournament at WynLakes Country Club in Montgomery
Returning in the morning to complete his final three holes of the second round, Sutter, of Cullman, finished off a 2-under 70 to post 10-under 134 to edge his brother Bailey Sutter to secure the 80th Alabama Boys State Junior Championship title. Sutter’s birdie on his final hole was the difference. He opened with a tournament-best 64 in Tuesday’s first round, while Bailey shot 68-67 to fall just short of successfully defending his title. Bailey Sutter was coming off a win at the Alabama Men’s State Amateur earlier in June.
Rawlin Sutter’s victory secures his spot in the 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship hosted at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas July 21-26.
Andrew Turner of Tuscaloosa and Thomas Crane of Mobile both finished with an overall 7-under 137 total. After a scorecard playoff, Turner took home the bronze medal.
