Ron Stromeyer edges Mike Genovese for the win

Three will compete in the PGA’s Professional National Championship in the spring

Ron Stromeyer of Pine Tree Country Club won the 2021 Alabama-NW Florida PGA Championship and one of three spots in the PGA’s Professional National Championship next spring.

Two others, Jordan Debonis of The Ledges and Mike Genovese, a life member, finished second and third, taking the section’s two other qualifying spots in the national event.

The top 20 finishers in the PNC will earn spots in the 2022 PGA Championship, one of professional golf’s four majors, to be played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 16-2022.

The three alternates from the section are: Andrew Peyton of Indian Hills Country Club, Neil Thompson of the Thompson Golf Academy, and David Pilkington of Pensacola Country Club. Peyton took the first alternate spot after defeating Thompson in a one-hole playoff.

The 2022 Professional National Championship will be contested April 17-22 at the Omni Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas.

In all, 46 Alabama and Northwest Florida PGA professionals competed in the 2021 Alabama–NW Florida PGA Professional Championship Presented by Cadillac, Club Car and Rolex.

It was contested Monday and Tuesday at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club. The club is one of three courses under the Clubs by Joe brand and is part of the Watersound Club in Panama City Beach.

On Day 2, Peyton got on a hot streak making three birdies in his first six holes and an eagle on the 13th. Stromeyer and Genovese got off to less-than-ideal starts in their final round, shooting one-over-par and even as they made the turn.

Debonis quickly worked his way into the lead on the back nine. After some back and forth in the middle of the back nine, Stromeyer clinched the win with late birdies.
