Shoal Creek Assistant Beats David Hanson, Eric Williamson in Playoff
Clay Brown celebrated a return to tournament golf Monday, capturing the HMG Stroke Play Series event at Riverchase Country Club on the third hole of a playoff.
It was the first tournament of 2020 for professionals in the Alabama-NW Florida PGA Section, with 43 players competing.
Clay Brown made a three-foot birdie putt to defeat David Hanson. Eric Williamson was eliminated on the second playoff hole.
All three players shot 3-under 69 to force the playoff.
Brown, of Shoal Creek, made four birdies and a bogey to get into the playoff, while Hanson of Camp Creek, birdied three of the final four holes for his 69. Williamson, also of Shoal Creek, also had four birdies and a bogey.
All three players parred the first playoff hole, but Williamson bowed out on the second hole when his second shot caught trees and he ended up with a par. Brown and Hanson each knocked their second shots onto the green of the par-5 and two-putted for birdies.
Brown’s winning birdie putt on the third playoff hole came after Hanson missed from 10 feet.
Mike Genovese, PGA life member, finished alone in fourth place. Matt Ganshaw, David Pilkington, Todd McCorkle and Matt Luther all tied for the fifth spot.
Brown pocketed $1,200 for the win, with Williamson and Hanson collecting $820 each. Genovese won $620, while the fifth-place ties were worth $422 each.
The next stroke play series event is scheduled for June 1 at Hoover Country Club. Indian Hills Country Club will host the section Match Play event on June 8.
