COVID-19 Worries Cited; Date for 2021 Event Set
The Regions Tradition and PGA Tour Champions announced that the 2020 golf tournament and associated events scheduled for September 23-27 at Greystone Golf & Country Club will be canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
The decision was made in conjunction with local and state health officials as the climate surrounding the coronavirus pandemic continues to fluctuate.
“This was a tremendously difficult decision to make, but it was important to be cautious in our approach as the health and safety of all constituents tied to the Regions Tradition is and always has been our No. 1 priority. Canceling the 2020 tournament was ultimately deemed to be the most logical decision,” said Gene Hallman, President and CEO of Bruno Event Team. “Our focus now shifts to hosting a successful tournament in 2021.”
2021 Regions Tradition scheduled for May 5-9
Over its 29-year history, the event has hosted the game’s legends as one of five major championships contested annually on PGA Tour Champions. More importantly, the tournament has generated in excess of $19 million for local charity, with Children’s of Alabama serving as the primary beneficiary. That tradition will continue in 2020.
“We are extremely pleased to announce that more than $750,000 will be donated to local charities this year, even with the cancelation of the event. These charitable donations are due to the generosity of our title sponsor, Regions Bank, and many other important community partners who contribute to the impact the Regions Tradition each year,” said Hallman.
All tickets purchased for the 2020 Regions Tradition will be refunded, with the Birdies for Charity program remaining open to donations until late September.
