42-year-old course to get $10 million facelift
If you have your heart set on playing golf high in the Canadian Rockies at the Whistler Resort in British Columbia, you’d better do it this summer.
Whistler Golf Club is closing in early September for a two-year renovation. The $10 million project is part of its comprehensive master plan redevelopment.
Originally opened in 1983, Whistler Golf Club, located about 80 miles east of Vancouver at about a half mile above sea level, is now 42 years old and requires significant updates to remain current, competitive, the resort said.
The renovation, set to begin on Sept. 2 and be completed in early summer 2027. The original architect was Arnold Palmer Course Design.
“This master plan has been years in the making, and we’re excited to see it finally come to fruition,” says Alan Kristmanson, general manager of the club. “We began this journey over three years ago with a vision to elevate our course to new heights. We look forward to getting underway next fall.”
Barrett Fisher, President & CEO of Tourism Whistler, which manages and operates golf club, said the renovation “will raise the stature of golf in Whistler, continuing to elevate the resort as a world-class summer and golf destination.”
Architect Thad Layton, formerly with Arnold Palmer Course Design, said the renovation will include:
- Complete Rebuild of tee complexes – Redesigned and added tee complexes to suit golfers of all skill levels.
- Bunker Overhaul – Repositioning, rebuilding, or eliminating bunkers in select cases to improve playability.
- Fairway and hole redesigns – Reconstruction of multiple fairways and a reimagining of holes 4, 8, and 18.
- Greens Realignment – The greens on holes 3 and 12 will be shifted to improve sightlines and ensure optimal player safety.
- Cart Path Improvements – Updates to cart paths, including replacement, realignment, and removal in select areas for enhanced flow.
“It’s going to be quite a transformation,” Layton said.
Upgrades to the golf club’s Palmer’s Restaurant are also being considered during winter months.
The town if Whistler is home to four championship golf courses: The Whistler Golf Club, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club, Nicklaus North Golf Course, and Big Sky Golf Club.
