Kidd joins pantheon of Streamsong designers
Streamsong Golf Resort in Central Florida will build a fifth golf course, this one designed by Bandon Dunes’s designer David McLay Kidd.
Kidd’s design will join those by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner (Streamsong Black), Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (Streamsong Red and The Chain), and Tom Doak (Streamsong Blue),
Construction of the Kidd course will begin in the next few months. The course, which has not yet been named, will traverse sand dunes and contain dramatic elevation changes. It will be situated between Streamsong Black and Streamsong Red.
“I have read many times how great players have a special love for the majors. Not sure I understood what that meant when I was younger, but now I get it. In the world of golf design, there are certain properties, locations and even owners that working for can be like playing in the majors. Streamsong, for me, is a major,” Kidd said.
“To be included in that group of architects requires my team and I to do something exceptional.,” Kidd said. “That opportunity both excites me and makes me nervous, but in a good way. My team and I are so excited to add to the history of a place so young and yet so rooted in a tradition of exceptional golf architecture.”
Kidd calls Streamsong commission ‘a major’
Streamsong Golf Resort burst onto the destination golf scene in 2012 with the opening of Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue along with a 228-room lodge and clubhouse. The resort added to its golf offerings in 2017 with Streamsong Black and, most recently, launched The Chain, a putting course and The Bucket – a 19-hole short course. The Chain, which opened for play last April, spans 2.5 acres.
Streamsong is home to the only winter-season destination with three courses in the Top 40 You Can Play in the United States as ranked by GOLF Magazine.
Kidd is credited with ushering in a new era of golf course architecture and established himself as one of the premier figures in modern golf architecture where his highly regarded golf course designs include Bandon Dunes, Mammoth Dunes, Tetherow, Gamble Sands, Nanea, and The Castle Course at St. Andrews.
Kidd’s courses claim three spots on GOLF Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play list.
Streamsong is owned by Lone Windmill, LLC and managed by KemperSports.
