Gordon Sargent, will play in St. Andrews Links Collegiate

Gordon Sargent likely to compete

NBC Sports and the St Andrews Links Trust have announced the inaugural St. Andrews Links Collegiate to be held at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland, this Oct. 23-25.

The three-day ST. Andrews Links Collegiate event will feature men’s and women’s golf teams from Georgetown University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University with two days of stroke play on the Jubilee Course followed by a day of  match play on the Old Course at St Andrews.

A likely competitor will be Birmingham’s Gordon Sargent, a graduate of Mountain Brook High School, who is scheduled to enter his senior year studying economics at Vanderbilt this fall.

Last September, Sargent, along with fellow Alabamian Nick Dunlap – who is now competing on the PGA Tour – helped lead the U.S. team to victory in the Walker Cup Matches, that were held on the Old Course. Last June, Sargent was the low amateur at the 2023 U.S. Open.

Gordon Sargent is assured a PGA Tour card

Unlike Dunlap, who quit the University of Alabama to turn pro within days of  winning the American Express Championship in January, Sargent is guaranteed a PGA Tour card upon graduation from Vanderbilt. He was the first graduate of the PGA Tour University, a ranking system that provides a pathway to tour membership for the nation’s top collegiate players.

Sargent could decide to turn pro after the NCAA Championship this May, however.

NBC Sports will present live coverage of the St. Andrews Links Collegiate, presented by TopGolf and World Wide Technology, on the Golf Channel and Peacock in the United States. Sky Sports will provide coverage in the U.K.

Golf Channel is the television home of college golf in the United States, providing more than 150 hours of live college golf coverage in 2023, including the Southwestern Invitational, Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Championships and the East Lake Cup.

Following its announcement in 2013 as the exclusive television provider of the NCAA Golf Championships, Golf Channel has provided live coverage of the men’s NCAA Championships since 2014 and the women’s NCAA Championships since 2015, which are hosted at the same venue in consecutive weeks at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
