Award cites commitment to service

Birmingham’s Highland Park Golf Course was recently awarded the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year – East” at the 2025 Troon Global Leadership Conference held in early November at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The course is the state’s oldest public golf course and has been named as No. 30 on GOLF Magazine’s list of the “30 Best Municipal Golf Courses in America.” The golf course property is owned by the City of Birmingham, while Highland Park Golf, LLC holds the long-term lease. The operation is managed by Troon.

“Congratulations to the team at Highland Park Golf Course on your well-deserved recognition,” said Troon Executive Vice President of Operations Matt Hurley. “Highland Park continues to be a proud pillar in the Birmingham community, thanks to the culture of service and hospitality the team has created. Your commitment to excellence sets a standard we are honored to celebrate within the Troon family.”

Troon Golf is part of the Troon family of brands that also includes Indigo Sports, Troon International, Troon PrivéICON Management Caddiemaster and Cliff Drysdale Tennis

The course’s history dates to 1903, when Nick Thompson designed the 18-hole course. In 1998, the course underwent a significant rejuvenation and was renovated by Honours Golf Founder Bob Barrett and golf course designer Bob Cupp. In late 2019 andearly 2020, the course was again updated with renovation work focusing on modernizing golf course bunkers and putting surfaces. During Highland Park’s storied history, it has played host to numerous celebrities and high-profile guests including Bobby Jones, Theodore Roosevelt, and Tiger Woods.

Highland Park Golf Course measures about 5,900 yards and plays to a par of 70. The course’s elevation changes, creeks, lakes, movement and small greens combine to challenge golfers and helps the course to play longer than the yardages on the scorecard. A new back tee on the par-4 15th sits on the property’s highest point and provides a fantastic view of the Birmingham skyline.
